Woke up with no energy. Thought about staying in bed but forced myself up and was on the road by 10am. On the far side of Hannibal the countryside reverted to the flat landscape of Illinois and stayed like that for the rest of the day. For 20 miles I was able to cycle along a road lane close to traffic which was great. A big, wide stretch of road, and only me on it. A little green cricket hitched a lift on one of my front panniers & stayed with me for about 7-8miles. We didn't talk much, though. But he was sound, a clicky kind of sound. He jumped off at a town called Shelbina, and straight under the wheels of a passingS.U.V. That was the end of little Jimmy!!
At Shelbina I had no energy. I'd gone fine for 40 miles but now all I wanted to do was lie down. I thought it might pass but 30 mins later I was feeling the same. The thought of another 24 miles to Macon just seemed too much. There was a small motel nearby so I stayed there. I got food & drinks in a supermarket and just rested for the rest of the day.
