Day 40: Hannibal (Fri 4th July)

The days festivities kicked off with the big 4th July parade at 10am. The route was lind with hundresd of people. The parade consisted of the usual fare. To be honest change the flags for tricolours and it could have passed for a St Paddy's day parade....... except that there was no catholocism present. There were Baptists, Lutherans, United Methodists, Charismatic Christians, 7th Day adventists etc, ...but no Papists. And with all the red, white and blue Dr Chuckles himself, Ian Paisley, would have loved it. Amen to that, brother. Ay-men!! There were loads of winners of the local "lovely girl" contests. Indeed, there was even one winner of a lovely boy contest!1 Thankfully he was only 18 months old. There were various floats, and, of course, the local politicians.

Later on there were various street competitions, a fence painting competition being the most colourful of those!! The culmination of the day was very definitely the fireworks display at dusk. From early evening thousands of people streamed into town from the locality and took up their favourite vantage points around town. It reminded me of New Year's eve in Sydney, with families coming out with blankets & picnics & fold up chairs to wait for the event to unfold.

As the sun went down fireworks started going off around town, but nothing spectacular and, after a while, I was thinking "Is this it??" But soon enough the main display kicked off and it was spectacular. There were some great fireworks. The show lasted about an hour. 30 mins later the town was empty. So I went to Bed.
